Your Car Gives Up During Moving Week: Keeping the Move on Track
Moving week is busy enough without a breakdown. Yet it happens more often than you might think: an old car that has been coping with short journeys suddenly has to make tip runs, fetch boxes and carry heavy loads, and something gives way. If the garage then tells you the repair is not worth doing, you need a plan that doesn’t derail the move.
Safety first, plans second
If the car breaks down on the road, your priority is getting yourself and any passengers safe. Move the car off the carriageway if you can, switch on the hazard lights and get everyone out of the way of traffic. Call your breakdown provider or a recovery service. GOV.UK and the Highway Code have guidance on what to do if you break down, particularly on motorways.
Once you are safe, resist the urge to make big decisions on the spot. The car may be recovered to your home or to a garage for diagnosis, and you can work out the next steps from there.
Rearrange the jobs the car was doing
A sudden loss of transport during moving week is mostly a logistics problem. Make a quick list of everything the car was going to do, then reassign each task:
- Tip runs could be booked as a council collection or handled by your removal team if they offer it.
- Fragile or valuable items you planned to carry yourself could travel with the removal van, properly packed.
- Getting the family and pets to the new home might need a hire car, a lift from friends or public transport.
- Collecting keys may be possible by arrangement with the estate agent.
Speak to your removal company early. They would much rather know about a change of plan a few days ahead than on the morning itself, and a little notice gives them time to adjust the loading plan.
When the garage says it isn’t worth fixing
If the diagnosis comes back with a repair bill larger than the car’s value, scrapping may be the sensible decision. Ask the garage for the fault in writing, find out if any charges are outstanding for inspection or storage, and settle these before arranging anything else. A scrap collection does not clear a garage bill.
For anyone in or around Bristol with a car that has broken down for good, Scrap My Car Bristol can collect the vehicle from wherever it ended up, whether that is your driveway or a local garage. The Kingswood-based firm asks for the registration, make, model, condition and location, provides a quote and, if you accept, arranges a collection time. For garage collections, it advises giving the garage clear permission to release the car and confirming who will hand over the keys.
Retrieve your belongings first
A car that breaks down mid-move is likely to be full of things: boxes, bags, cleaning supplies, perhaps the important documents folder. Before it is collected, empty it completely. Check the boot, under the seats, the glovebox and door pockets, and don’t forget the parking permit or toll tag on the windscreen. If you cannot reach the garage yourself, ask someone you trust to help.
Paperwork while you are on the move
When the car is scrapped, the registered keeper needs to tell the DVLA, and you should keep any paperwork provided. GOV.UK sets out what to do. As you are about to change address, make sure any letters will reach you, and set up post redirection if you have not done so already. Remember to cancel the insurance and breakdown cover too.
Arriving without the old car
Losing a car in moving week feels like a disaster at the time, but it doesn’t have to spoil the move. Keep everyone safe, reassign the car’s jobs, decide calmly whether it is worth repairing and, if not, arrange collection and paperwork promptly. You may even find that arriving at the new home without an unreliable car is a relief.
